Hockey Falls to No. 12 Providence in Season Opener
October 02, 2021 | Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Army West Point hockey team was unable to get the offense going in the first game of the season against the No. 12 Providence College Friars, who took the win in the first meeting between the two schools since 2019-20.
After a year with no fans in the stands, Army was able to make the trip to Schneider Arena and play in front of a crowd of 3,000-plus. The Black Knights fired off 25 shots in the contest, but were not able to break onto the score sheet as they would eventually fall to the Friars, 7-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Providence was able to break onto the scoreboard early in the contest, but Army responded with a few scoring chances of its own. The Black Knights created a few power play chances just two minutes into the contest. Joey Baez fired off two quick shots, the first of his collegiate career, followed by shots from Colin Bilek and Daniel Haider. Providence was able to kill off the penalty and keep the Black Knights off the scoreboard.
Jake Felker had the best chance of the first period for Army, as the Providence keeper was barely able to get a pad on his backhand shot. Noah Wilson also created a few opportunities, firing off a pair of shots in the first 20.
Mitch Machlitt, Eric Butte and Kendrick Frost all fired off a pair of shots in the final two periods of play, but the Providence defense was able to keep the Black Knights scoreless throughout the next two periods of play.
