Petrella Headlines League Academic Awards

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – For the fourth time in his career, Army West Point senior Ben Petrella has been named Patriot League Track & Field Scholar Athlete of the Year.Â

The Liverpool, N.Y., native headlines a five-cadet class of Academic All-Patriot League recipients from Army by taking home the league's top academic honor.

It marks the second time this academic year in which Petrella was named the league's top student athlete, as he won the award following the cross country season in the fall. He received the honor for both indoor track & field and cross country last year. Following the 2019 season, he received his first Google Cloud Academic All-America honor as well as his second Academic All-District honor.Â

In addition, four other Cadets received recognition from the league for their academic achievements as Academic All-Patriot League recipients.Â

Joining Petrella from the men's team is senior Michael Renard. He takes home his first academic honor after a year of dominance for the Army throws team. Renard set both the Army and Patriot League records this season with an 18.76-meter shot put throw earlier this year. Last week, he set the Patriot League Championship record with a throw of 18.70 meters. He was named Patriot League Male Field Athlete of the Year.Â

On the women's side, Lynne Mooradian, Anna Tovkach and Haley Watson were named to the Academic All-Patiort League team.Â

Mooradian has been no stranger to academic excellence in here career, as she too is a four-time Patriot League Scholar Athlete of the Year. Like Petrella, she was named an Academic All-American in 2019 after winning the nation's top academic prize for a student athlete in 2018 as the Google Cloud Academic All-America of the Year.Â

Tovkach takes home her first league academic honor in her first season of eligibility as a sophomore. She was named Patriot League Female Track Athlete of the Week on two occasions this season and set the Army record in the 500-meter run and posted the school's second-best 800-meter run in history.Â

Watson claims the honor for the third consecutive season after being named to the academic team following both the indoor and outdoor campaigns in 2019. Watson and Tovkach combined to take gold at the Patriot League Championships in the 4x800 meter relay, and Watson also won the Distance Medley Relay.Â
