Black Knights Split Doubleheader In Fayetteville
February 28, 2020 | Baseball
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Army West Point baseball team split its doubleheader, defeating Air Force 9-1 in game one and falling to Campbell 4-0 in the nightcap at the Armed Forces Invitational at Segra Stadium.
The Black Knights saw tremendous performances by their starting pitchers today, as Logan Smith tossed a complete game in his game one victory and Anthony LoRicco struck out a career-high 12 batters in a one-hit performance in Army's loss to Campbell.
The Army bats were alive in the first game against Air Force, posting nine runs on 11 hits in the contest. Much of that production came from the middle of the lineup, as Anthony Giachin, Andre Walden and John McKenna combined for eight RBIs.
McKenna delivered the big blow in the game, drilling a towering two-run home run over the center field wall. He later added a third RBI when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Giachin also drove in three while going 3-5 in the game.
Logan Smith was superb on the mound for the Black Knights, going nine strong innings with four hits allowed and no earned runs. It is the first complete game of Smith's four-year career at Army.
Anthony LoRicco picked up where Smith left off, shutting down Campbell through the first seven innings of the contest. He exited after 7.2 innings with just one hit allowed and 12 strikeouts.
The Camels were able to break through against the Army bullpen, scoring four runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the game 5-0. Army struggled to get going at the plate and were held to just four hits in the game. Campbell starting pitcher Cam Cowan went seven two-hit innings with seven strikeouts.
Army will face both teams again this weekend as they face Air Force on Satuday and Campbell on Sunday. Army and Air Force will meet a 5 p.m. on Saturday.
