Black Knights Fall to Navy in Annual Rifle Star Match

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Army West Point rifle team was defeated by rival Navy, 4667-4634, in the annual Army-Navy Star Match presented by USAA on Saturday.
The Midshipmen held the advantage in both disciplines, combining for a service academy scoring advantage of 5828-5787. The score is determined by taking the top five overall scores.Â
Junior captain Clayton Hanson posted the top smallbore score in the match with a mark of 582. His 1167 aggregate score tied him for third overall. Teammate Kaitlyn Kutz was second in air rifle with a 590 score.Â
The win marks the second consecutive rifle Star victory for Navy.Â

AGGREGATE: Navy 4667, Army 4634 (SA: Navy 5828, Army 5787)
- Junior Clayton Hanson's 1167 led the team and was tied for the third best score in the match.Â
- Kaitlyn Kutz placed fifth with a score of 1166.Â
- Hanson topped the smallbore chart with a 582 score. He has been the team's top scorer in the discipline in back-to-back contests.Â
- Kutz ranked fourth overall and second on the team with a 576 score.Â
- Kutz's 590 score was second best overall on the day behind Navy's Michael Zanti (592)
- Hanson (585) and Lauren McMahan (584) were second and third on the team and seventh and eighth overall.
UP NEXT
The Black Knights will return to action later this month in the team's NCAA Qualification match on Feb. 22 at Tronsrue Marksmanship Center.
