December 21, 2020 | Wrestling
WEST POINT, N.Y. – After much anticipation this winter, the Army West Point wrestling team released their schedule for the 2021 season on Monday afternoon. Due to the uncertainties of the new year, the schedule will act as a tentative guideline with the possibility of changes. All match times are to be determined and will be released in the coming weeks.
The Black Knights will kick off the year with a double-header against LIU and Clarion University on Saturday, Jan. 9. Army is expected to host seven home contests including hosting service academy rival Navy on Feb. 12 in the annual Star Match.
"I am just really thankful for the support of our administration and grateful for the opportunities provided for our guys to compete," Head Coach Kevin Ward said. "I'm so proud of the way they have remained focused on their goals throughout a really difficult fall, and we are all looking forward to stepping into the arena and competing again in just a few weeks."
Army will compete only once on the road during the regular season when they take on three-time defending conference champion, Lehigh University, on Feb. 9. The Black Knights are coming off an impressive 2020 season, posting a 10-3 overall record, notching a third-place finish at the conference championships, securing their fourth straight win against Navy and recording their second straight season with seven NCAA qualifiers.
"This season obviously looks much different from any we have had in the past, but the goal never changes," said Ward. "COVID has changed the way we operate, but it hasn't changed our goals as a program or as individuals. We want to be the best team in the country, and we are grateful for the opportunity to compete."
The Black Knights competition schedule is as follows:
Jan. 9: LIU/Clarion University (Home)
Jan. 16: Hofstra (Home)
Jan. 24: Binghamton (Home)
Jan. 31: Drexel/Bucknell (Home)
Feb. 6: Lehigh (Away)
Feb. 12: Navy (Home)
Feb. 26: EIWA Conference Championships (TBD)
Mar. 18-20: NCAA Championships (St. Louis, Missouri)
