Black Knights Host Army Open
January 09, 2020 | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
Â
While most of the team is scheduled to compete at the Nittany Lion Challenge at Penn State on Saturday, several key contributors saw action in today's meet. Senior captain Calli McMullen was among them, claiming victory in the 60 meter dash.Â
The meet marked the second of three home meets for the Black Knights, as they will compete once more at Gillis Field House on Feb. 22, one week before the Patriot League Championships.Â
Saturday's meet in Pennsylvania will be the squad's first in-depth competition of the indoor season, as the men's team aims repeat as Patriot League Champions and the women's team aims to improve upon their second place finish in the conference in 2019.
COACH'S CORNER: Head Coach Mike Smith
"Our goal in having this meet was to give our developmental athletes a chance to compete and to provide a rust buster for for some of our top level speed power folks. Ultimately we need to return to work as quickly as we can and there is no real substitute for competition. The holiday break is a bit troublesome for training so the return to competition can be a mixed bag. By and large I saw some good things today."
(On men's meet)
"Jon Redmond showed that he is close to where he was before the break. He is demonstrating some consistency and that will prove to be valuable down the road. The majority of our team will compete again on Saturday at Penn State. The competition there will be a step up for us so we will get a good feel for where we are as a whole. We were able to get some work done today and that accomplished our primary goal."
(On women's meet)
"Our hurdle women did a nice job again. That event may prove to be a strong one for us this season. Calli McMullen also looked good out there today but then again, she always does. I talk about her a lot because she is our leader and she gets the job done. It's not just that she wins, it is all the things she does during the week that lead to the wins. It's also how she looks out there in competition. She does everything with a purpose so it is not a surprise when she has success. She is confident and fearless at the same time. If today is any indication of what is to come later this season, I think we are going to see some special performances from her. We just ordered new 10' x 8' record boards to hang down in Gillis and I fully expect an almost weekly climb up and down a ladder this winter to switch out records that she breaks.Â
The majority of our team will compete Saturday in Pennsylvania. The competition there will be a step up for us so we will get a good feel for where we the team is as a whole. We will have some season debuts by our middle distance crews and some of the distance women will get things rolling. All in all, we were able to get some work done today and that accomplished our primary goal."
