Army Drops League Home Opener to Colgate

WEST POINT, N.Y. – For the second consecutive outing, the Army West Point men's basketball team found itself within single digits in the final seconds against one of the top teams in the Patriot League.
Unfortunately for the Black Knights (5-8, 0-2 Patriot League), their late comeback bid fell short versus the defending league champs, Colgate (11-4, 2-0 Patriot League), on Monday night at Christl Arena in a 70-65 loss.
Majority of Army's scoring came from its two senior captains. Matt Wilson recorded a double-double with 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting to pair with 11 boards, while going up against the league's reigning player of the year in the low block.
Funk had 17 on the night and was a catalyst in the late surge by the Cadets. The Warrington, Pa., native had 10 points in the closing six minutes of play, which included a 3-pointer that brought the deficit within two with eight seconds left.
Army also had solid showings from Alex King and Tucker Blackwell as the junior duo combined for 18 points after putting in nine apiece. King also tallied a career-high seven assists and four boards.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- With 12:59 on the clock in the opening stanza, Wilson scored in the low post to make it a 14-9 game. The Wilson bucket was the beginning of a 10-3 run that pushed Army's advantage to double-digits, 22-12, and forced Colgate to call timeout.
- Following the break, the Raiders regrouped and went on a 13-2 to grab the lead with 4:21 left to play in the frame. Army closed out the final 3:20 on a 9-3 run and went into the half up by five, 33-28.
- The two sides traded baskets for the opening portion of the new half, but the Raiders used a 16-6 spurt to notch their first double-digit advantage of the night, 55-44. Behind a late spark from Funk, Army was able to fight back into the game get within two points, 66-64, with eight seconds to go.
- The 13-4 run that started with 2:01 remaining began with a Funk layup and was capped by a 3-pointer from the senior guard. That was as close as the Cadets could get though as Colgate iced the game at the charity stripe en route to securing the road win.
