LAS VEGAS – Despite a late goal, the No. 20 Army West Point hockey team fell to No. 14 Providence in the opening game of the Fortress Invitational.Â

The Friars took a 3-0 lead before the Black Knights rallied with one of their own with 8:03 remaining in the action.

Thomas Farrell netted his first-career goal in an even-strength opportunity to cut Providence's lead.Â

HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ Â
- Providence was first on the board thanks to a power play score 9:23 into the action.Â
- With 3:39 on the clock, Brett Abdelnour took advantage on a 2-on-1, but dinged his shot off the pipe and the rebound just barely missed the goal line.Â
- The Friars took advantage of the excitement at the other end of the ice and snuck in another 14 seconds after to go ahead 2-0.Â
- Providence netted its third of the night 7:26 into the final period.Â
- The Black Knights rallied back though as Thomas Farrell posted his first-career goal with 8:03 remaining in the game.Â
- Colin Bilek fought the puck off the boards finding Dominic Franco in front. Franco dished it off to a wide open Farrell for the score.Â
- The Black Knights played with an empty net in the final 2:56 of the game, but could not find the back of the net with the 6-on-5 advantage. Â
HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- The Black Knights dropped their first game to a Hockey East opponent tonight and are 2-1 on the season.Â
- Farrell notched his first score of his Army career and fifth overall point.Â
- He is the third freshman to score this year for the Black Knights and bumps the class' total to seven.Â
- Franco produced his fourth point in two games with his assist tonight.Â
- The senior reached 10 helpers on the year and 49 in his career.Â
- Franco totals 16 points in 2019-20 and 90 overall to lead the senior class.Â
- Bilek was also on the score sheet for the second game in a row. He has posted three points over the last two contests.Â
- The sophomore has tallied eight assists this year and 12 points. In his career, he totals 18-career helpers and 29-career points.Â
- Trevin Kozlowski made 12 saves tonight on Providence's 15 shots.Â
