Army Picked First, Hurtubise Tabbed POTY in Patriot League Preseason Poll
January 28, 2020 | Baseball
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - With the start of the 2020 baseball season just two weeks away, the Patriot League has announced that the Army West Point baseball team has been tabbed to finish first in its preseason poll and senior outfielder Jacob Hurtubise has been named the Patriot League Baseball Preseason Player of the Year.
The Black Knights enter the new year having won the past two Patriot League titles and will aim to be the first team to win three consecutive championships since the league adopted the tournament format.
Hurtubise garners the league's top individual preseason honor after being named Army's first All-American since 2009 last season.
The 2019 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year broke the Army single season record in runs (71), walks (69) and stolen bases (45) last season, while setting the Patriot League career record in walks (141) and stolen bases (141). He recorded a league-best batting average of .375 and led the league with 75 hits.
The Zionsville, Ind., native became the first Cadet to be selected in the Major League Baseball draft since 2015 after his 39th round selection by the Seattle Mariners.
In addition to Hurtubise, two Cadets were recognized with Preseason All-Patriot League honors as junior Anthony Giachin was selected as the top third baseman and sophomore Jeremiah Adams received at-large recognition.
Giachin was named Army's first preseason All-American since 2013 by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper earlier this year.
Army will open the regular season on Feb. 14 when it kicks off a three-game series with Duke in Durham, N.C.
