Late Army Push Not Enough to Beat Loyola
January 18, 2020 | Women's Basketball
BALTIMORE, Md. – The Army women's basketball team showed no quit against Patriot League foe Loyola, even after the Black Knights found themselves trailing the Greyhounds by as many as 16 points in the fourth quarter. Army worked to cut its deficit to seven in the closing minutes of play, but its hopes of a comeback fell short with Loyola claiming the 68-59 victory.
Army had a trio of scorers in double figures led by Lindsey Scamman's 15 points, while Morgann Yancey finished with 14 and Alisa Fallon totalled 12. Scamman did much of her damage from the charity stripe, sinking nine free throws on the day. Yancey shot lights out, connecting on four of her five attempts from 3-point range. Though as a team, Army was limited to shooting percentages of 38.8 from the field and 29.2 from beyond-the-arc.
Loyola's Stephanie Karcz recorded her second triple-double of the season with 13 points, 12 rebounds and 12 steals. Her 12 steals marked a new program record. Alexis Gray also scored in double digits for the Greyhounds, totaling 11 points. Loyola capitalized on Army's turnovers, with 24 of its points coming after the Cadets lost the ball.

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND NOTES
- Yancey's 14 points and four made 3-pointers each represent new season highs.
- Her five made baskets tied her career high, which she accomplished most recently against American on Jan. 12, 2019.
- Scamman also corralled 10 rebounds to mark her second consecutive double-double.
- The 29 Palms, Calif., native is now up to six double-doubles on the season.
- Scamman has also scored in double figures in five straight games, which represent the longest double-digit scoring streak of her career.
- This represents Fallon's 12th double-digit scoring game of the season and her third in league play.
- Sarah Bohn was on the floor for all 40 minutes of action, marking the third time that she's been in for a full game since league play began on Jan. 2.
- As a team, Army shot 14-of-17 from the free throw line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Greyhounds opened the game hot, connecting on five of their first seven shots to push ahead 12-2. A 3-ball from Sarah Bohn eventually ended the Greyhounds 10-0 run. However, Loyola would go on to hold a 20-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, shooting 8-of-17 from the field.
- Loyola continued to pour it on in the second quarter, shooting at a 50 percent clip. With just over two minutes remaining in the first half, the Greyhounds jumped to their largest lead of the game with the 35-16 advantage. Though Army closed the opening half out on 7-0 run to cut Loyola's lead to 12 points at the break.
- Despite Army building momentum heading into the third quarter, Loyola maintained its double-digit lead for the entirety of the third frame. Much of what kept Loyola from building a greater lead was the Black Knights' success from beyond-the-arc in the third quarter, as they shot 4-of-6 from 3-point range. Still, the Greyhounds held a comfortable 52-38 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the contest.
- An Ava Therien layup with just under eight minutes to play gave Loyola a 16-point cushion. Though the Black Knights responded with a 10-1 run to make the score 57-50 with just under four minutes left. Army kept within reach for the remainder of the contest, but Loyola closed out the game shooting 9-of-10 from the charity stripe to secure its first Patriot League win.
UP NEXT
- The Black Knights return to action on Wednesday, when they host Lafayette. The contest will have a 6 p.m. tipoff.
