Black Knights Place Fourth At West Point Open

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point gymnastics team opened its 2020 campaign with a fourth place finish at the 29th annual West Point Open at Christl Arena on Friday.
Penn State claimed victory for the seventh consecutive year and has now won 11 of the past 12 West Point Opens.
Mathew Davis placed fourth in the all-around with a score of 77.800. The result qualifies the sophomore for February's Winter Cup Finals in Las Vegas, Nev. The event serves as a qualifying meet with the goal of making the United States National Team.
Six Black Knights finished in the top-eight of their respective events to qualify for Saturday's individual finals:
Mathew Davis: Floor (14.050, First), Parallel Bars (12.700, Seventh)
Mitchell McHugh: Floor (13.750, Sixth)
Jacob Nauman: Vault (14.300, Fifth)
Kiernan Reagan: Still Rings, (13.650, Fifth)
Rex Scott: Pommel Horse (13,400, Eighth)
Alejandro Suarez: Horizontal Bar (13.100, Sixth)
The individual portion of the West Point Open will begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Christl Arena.
HIGHLIGHTS AND NOTES
- Davis recorded the top overall score on the floor exercise with a 14.050 score. The 2019 NCAA Championships individual finalist will compete on the floor and parallel bars on Saturday.
- Junior Mitchell McHugh posted a career-best 13.750 score on the floor to qualify for Saturday's finals. It was the sixth best score on the floor exercise.
- Junior Kiernan Reagan added a career-best score of his own, recording a 13.650 on the still rings to qualify for Saturday's final. That was the day's fifth highest score on the rings.
