Army Earns Bonus Point in Shootout Win over Air Force

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Thanks to Eric Butte's late game heroics with 51 seconds on the clock, the Army West Point hockey team sent its rivalry game with Air Force to double overtime and a sudden death shootout.

The Black Knights and Falcons needed nine rounds of a shootout to decide who got the bonus point in the night's contest. Ultimately, it was Kevin Dineen who sealed the shootout victory for Army in front of a sellout crowd at Tate Rink.Â

The game officially ended in a tie, but the Cadets earned a bonus point for Atlantic Hockey standings with the shootout victory.

HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ Â
- Army started off hot with a goal 18:45 into the game.Â
- John Keranen set up the goal beautifully for Brett Abdelnour who scored from the doorstep.Â
- The Falcons netted their first of the night halfway through the second period, 9:36 in.
- Nearly two minutes later, Air Force struck again, this time on the power play, putting the opponent up 2-1.Â
- The lead didn't last long as the Black Knights scored a power play of their own thanks to Michael Wilson.Â
- Alex Wilkinson put the puck on net and Keranen and Wilson poked it in for the goal with 11:07 left in regulation.Â
- Air Force went ahead 3-2 on its second power play of the game at the 11:51 mark.Â
- Trevin Kozlowski cleared the ice with 1:39 to go in the third period to give Army a 6-on-5 advantage.Â
- Eric Butte's late heroics from the red line tied the game for the Black Knights to send things into overtime.Â
- It took two overtimes and nine rounds of a shootout to decide who the extra point went to, but the Cadets came out on top thanks to Dineen who tucked it top shelf.Â
HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- It was the second shootout victory for Army in five games.Â
- Dineen netted the bonus point goal in the ninth round.Â
- Butte sent the game into overtime thanks to a goal with 51 seconds to go.Â
- It was the sophomore's sixth score of the season and eighth in his career. He now has 11 points in 2019-20 and 18 points overall.Â
- Abdelnour tallied goal number four of the season for the Black Knights.Â
- Wilson notched a power play goal tonight as well as assisting on the game-tying score.Â
- The senior increased his goal total of the year to eight and point total to 15.
- He boasts 33 goals in his career and 63 points.Â
- It marked his 12th-career power play tally and 17th multi-point game.Â
- Keranen, Mason Krueger, Wilkinson, Dominic Franco and Colin Bilek were also in on the assists tonight.Â
- Franco inches closer to 100-career points with 91, while Wilkinson has 71.Â
