Men's Rugby Wrap Up Weekend Victorious

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point men's rugby team fended off a resilient Dartmouth squad Sunday afternoon, on its way to the first win of the fall season, 29-23.

This was the second game in three days for the Black Knights (1-1) at the Anderson Rugby Complex, providing ample opportunities for head coach Matt Sherman to get a look at numerous players in live game action.

"I think the positive for the weekend was a lot of minutes for a lot of guys, and some new guys getting tested," said Sherman.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Dartmouth had a couple of early penalty kick attempts. Pat Sheehy converted the second to give the Big Green an early 3-0 lead in the 11th minute.
Army responded with back-to-back Larry Williams Jr. tries (one Blackwood conversion) to take a 12-3 lead in the 26th minute.
Marco Carrabotta raced for a long try in the 35th minute, followed by Blackwood's second conversion.
Minutes later off a Dartmouth turnover, Nolan Green ran nearly the length of the field for a try to make it 26-3 after Blackwood's third conversion.
The Big Green began their comeback with a try right before the half to make it 26-8 going into the locker room.
The second half was a defensive battle for the first twenty minutes, before Mike Weir cut further into Army's lead for Dartmouth. A Sheehy conversion would make it 26-15.
What would be the Big Green's final score came in the 69th minute after Luke Bienstock crossed the try line. Sheehy's second conversion made it 26-22.
Jack Royston gave Army some cushion with a penalty kick in the 75th minute, and after some tough defense in the final minutes, the game finished 29-22.
