Giachin, Hurtubise, Opp Garner Academic Praise

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The Army West Point baseball team saw three honored with Academic All-Patriot League nods on Thursday.Â
Army tied for the league lead with three cadet-athletes selected to the academic squad. Anthony Giachin, Jacob Hurtubise and Cam Opp were each one of the 13 athletes acknowledged on the team.
Senior left-handed pitcher Cam Opp (economics, 3.578 GPA) earned his third academic all-league nod, while teammate and Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year Jacob Hurtubise (operations research, 3.678 GPA) is a second-time all-academic team selection.
Nine of the 13 Academic All-Patriot League selections were named to the one of the two All-Patriot League teams as well. The Black Knights sophomore third baseman Giachin (mechanical engineering, 4.041 GPA) garnered his first academic praise Thursday.
To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.
The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
