Hurtubise Top Defender; 7 Cadets Earn Recognition

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point baseball saw a conference-leading seven cadet-athletes earn All-Patriot League distinction on Wednesday, including garnering a major award.

Junior centerfielder Jacob Hurtubise was selected as the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, marking the second-straight season the Cadets received major award praise.

Hurtubise showed off his range in centerfield, leading all Patriot League outfielders with 118 putouts to go along with a .992 fielding percentage. The Zionsville, Ind., native also had two outfield assists. He along with the Army defense helped contribute to the Black Knights' league-low 3.92 team ERA. In conference play alone, Hurtubise recorded a league-high 64 putouts in centerfield with a 1.000 fielding percentage.

In total seven Black Knights registered All-Patriot League accolades, including four on the first team. Five cadet-athletes received all-league honors for the second time in their careers; senior pitcher Daniel Burggraaf (first team), sophomore third baseman Anthony Giachin (first team), senior pitcher Tyler Giovinco (second team), Hurtubise (first team) and senior pitcher Cam Opp (second team).

To close out Army's selections was Trey Martin (first team) and Jeremiah Adams (second team).

Patriot League baseball major awards and all-league honors were voted on by conference head coaches, who could not select their own student-athletes or themselves.

Army returns to action this Saturday when it travels to Worcester, Mass., for the Patriot League tournament semifinals. The three-game series will begin on Saturday with a twin bill followed by a single game on Sunday, if necessary. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. on both days with each contest being carried live on the Patriot League Network.Â
