Army Splits Twin Bill; Will Be 3rd Seed in Postseason

EASTON, Pa. - With a doubleheader split against Lafayette here Monday afternoon the Army West Point baseball team will be the third seed in the upcoming Patriot League tournament.
The Black Knights defeated their host 16-7 in the seven-inning opener before dropping a 5-1 decision in the nightcap.
Army closes the Patriot League regular season tied with Holy Cross for second place at 15-10. Unfortunately, the Crusaders hold the head-to-head tie breaker after they won the season series, 3-2. The Cadets will now travel to Holy Cross this weekend for the Patriot League semifinals beginning Saturday.
Blake Ledoux and Jacob Hurtubise tallied three hits apiece on the day to lead the Black Knights' offense. Ledoux, John McKenna and Jeremiah Adams brought home three runs batted in, while McKenna, Tim Simoes and Andre Walden accounted for three runs each.
Daniel Burggraaf earned the win for Army in Game 1, going 5.0 innings allowing six hits and seven runs. Ray Bartoli was tagged with the loss in the second game after giving up four hits and four runs in 4.1 innings.
Anthony Giachin achieved a personal milestone on the day when he drilled a double to right center in the opener. That hit handed him 20 doubles on the year, which set a program single-season record.
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- McKenna registered his first home run of the year in Game 1 and it brought home Trey Martin and Walden to hand Army its final run total of 16.
- Army finished with four extra base hits, while Lehigh compiled five.
- The Cadets went a perfect 11-for-11 on stolen base opportunities throughout the twin bill, with 10 of those coming during the opener.
- Hurtubise pulls within three steals of breaking the Patriot League record. He now has 97 for his career.
- Hurtubise also earned an impressive five walks on the day.
- Both teams turned three double plays.
- Logan Smith, Harry Flannery Jr., and Anthony LoRicco also saw action on Monday.
- The Black Knights' pitching staff compiled 11 strikeouts on the day, led by five from Bartoli.
How It Happened - Game 1
- Lafayette took a 1-0 edge after scoring one run on one hit in the bottom of the third. The Leopards loaded the bases with one out before a Spencer Rouse sacrifice fly allowed the game's first run to cross home plate.
- The Black Knights responded in a big way in the fourth when they plated four runs on four hits. Four-straight batters reached base to lead off the frame highlighted by a two-run double by Giachin. Adams and Simoes picked up the other two RBI during the inning.
- Army made it a 9-1 ballgame in the top of the fifth after scoring five runs on two hits and three errors. Adams and Ledoux both added another two RBI to help the Cadets cause.
- Unfortunately, the home side cut into the deficit in the bottom half with three runs on two hits to pull within 9-4.
- The Black Knights added one run back in the top of the sixth but a three-run bottom frame for Lafayette made it a 10-7 game heading into the final inning.
- Army ultimately put the game away in the seventh when it earned an impressive six runs on three hits and one error. Simoes, Adams, Drake Titus and Martin all scored during the frame, while Titus, Hurtubise and McKenna (3x) all recorded an RBI.
How It Happened - Game 2
- The Leopards broke the scoreless deadlock with four runs on three hits and one error in the fifth.
- The home side added an insurance run in the sixth when Jake Sniegocki led off with a home run.
- Army tried to rally in the ninth and even managed to earn a bases loaded RBI walk by Hurtubise but that would be all the Cadets would get.
FACTS & FIGURES
- The Black Knights earned 17 runs on 16 hits, while Lafayette accumulated 12 runs on 16 hits.
- Both teams posted an error on the day with Army being tagged with two and the Leopards' five.
- Army left 15 runners on base. Lafayette stranded 14.

- The Black Knights close out the regular season on Wednesday when they host Villanova for a midweek contest.
