Army Drops NCAA Regional Opener to #8 Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Army West Point baseball team fell 11-2 here Friday afternoon to No. 8-ranked Texas Tech in the teams' opening game of the Lubbock regional.
Army saw it's nationally ranked foe break the game open early with eight runs over the first five frames to create an 8-0 gap between the teams. Army finally broke through in the sixth when it tallied its first hit and run of the contest. Unfortunately, the Red Raiders extended their lead with a three-run shot over the left field fence in the seventh to ultimately put the game away.
Josh White finished 2-for-2 with a run batted in to lead the Black Knights. Jacob Hurtubise, Andre Walden, and Trey Martin each chipped in with a hit as well, while Hurtubise and Jeremiah Adams accounted for the Cadets' two runs.
With his hit on Friday Hurtubise extended his hitting streak to 16-straight games. The Zionsville, Ind., native has also reached base safely in 39 consecutive contests.
Daniel Burggraaf was credited with the loss after going 2.0 innings allowing seven hits and five runs.
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Eight of Texas Tech's final 11 runs came with two outs.
- Army posted one extra base hit in the contest and it came from the bat of Martin in the sixth inning.
- He now has 11 doubles to his name this season.
- Martin and White both recorded an RBI to hand them number 41 and 20, respectively, on the year.
- The Black Knights used five pitchers with Mike Gagliardi, Joe Santoro, Anthony LoRicco and Jacob Carte all seeing action.
- The Red Raiders posted six extra base hits in the game, including four doubles.
- Texas Tech's starter Micah Dallas pitched 7.0 solid innings allowing just three hits and one unearned run. He had a no hitter going until Hurtubise broke it up with a one-out single in the sixth.
- Army's pitching staff compiled five strikeouts, while the home side tallied nine.
- Six Red Raiders registered two or more hits in the game.
How It Happened
- The No. 8 team in the nation jumped on things early, scoring three big runs on four hits in the opening frame. Three-straight hits brought home two of those three runs.
- Texas Tech added on in the second when it plated another two runs with two outs. Again the Red Raiders posted three consecutive hits to score their two runs, including two doubles.
- The home side increased its edge to 6-0 in the third when Braxton Fulford cashed in on a two-out single through the right side to score Kurt Wilson from second.
- The Red Raiders then loaded the bases in the fifth with one out when Tanner O'Tremba delivered a two-RBI double down the left field line to create an 8-0 gap between the teams.
- Army finally broke through in the sixth when Hurtubise sparked a small rally after a one-out single. Walden followed things up with a fielder's choice to place two runners on after they credited an error on the shortstop to allow Hurtubise to reach second. The Red Raiders recorded the second out of the frame but Martin took the first pitch he saw during the ensuing at bat to left field for an RBI-double to score the Cadets' first run of the game.
- Texas Tech continued its two-out scoring when it blasted a three-run shot over the left field fence in the seventh to extend its lead to 11-1. That hit came from the bat of Cameron Warren, who tallied his 15th long ball of the year.
- Army notched one run back in the final frame when Adams led off the inning with a single through the left side. A Cam Cerruto walk placed two runners on base with no outs. White brought home the Black Knights' final run following a single through the right side during the next at bat.
