COACH'S CORNER: Head Coach Mike Smith
"This is the largest group of NCAA East Regional qualifiers in the history of the Army program. We had hoped to qualify more, but a good number of people we had on the bubble ended up as the first or second one out of qualifying. In many events, the time, height or distance that it took to be in the top 48 was the best mark in the history of the regional system. We just have to continue to improve and adjust our expectations of what is good.Â
"Having said that, I am pleased with the quality of the group we are brining to Jacksonville and think that a number of them have a realistic chance to advance to the NCAA Championships in Austin. The top 12 finishers from this meet will advance, and we have a couple of guys that are already in that position on the list. August Cook (javelin) and Jamir Gibson (discus) are both seeded in the top ten headed into the meet. If they throw what they have already thrown, they will be competing in Austin in early June.Â
"Several of our other guys are capable of the type of performances that it will take to advance, so we will see what they can do when they line up. The way Jeff Giannettino has been jumping, I think he is also a legitimate candidate to advance.
"The reality is for most of our guys, if they do what they have already done to get here, they will be pretty competitive and that is the expectation that we have."
Young, Giannettino and Cook earned individual Patriot League Championships in Army's second place finish at the league event last week. Four members of the group broke outdoor Academy records this season. August Cook (No. 5, Javelin) and Jamir Gibsion (No. 6, Discus) rank in the top ten nationally with their program record setting marks. Cook was the lone member of the team to advance past the preliminary stage into the NCAA Championships in 2018.Â
