14 Cadets Wrestle at U.S. Open

LAS VEGAS – The Army West Point wrestling team sent 14 wrestlers to compete at the 2019 Marine Corps U.S. Open in the junior and senior divisions last weekend.
Junior Ben Harvey led the squad in the senior division by placing seventh at 78 kg and qualifying for the World Team Trials on May 18-19 in Raleigh, N.C.
In the junior tournament, rookie P.J. Ogunsanya qualified for the World Team Trials with a sixth-place finish at 65 kg. The River Forest, Ill., native posted a 7-3 record with four technical falls in the tournament. Rookies Owen Brown (74 kg), Taylor Brown (74 kg) and Markus Hartman (74 kg), as well as sophomore Nico Manzonelli (97 kg), were all one-win shy of qualifying for the World Team Trials. Brown posted a team-best 5-2 record with four technical falls.
"The UWW Junior and US Open Tournament is where the best in our country come to compete for titles and a birth at the World Team Trials in a few weeks," said head assistant coach Ned Shuck. "P.J. and Ben will have the opportunity represent West Point RTC at the trials where they compete to earn a World Team spot and represent our country on the mat in the World Championships. I'm proud of some gritty performances by a few of our guys battling and succeeding with some injuries. This elite competition is only going to help our guys raise their level of performance and help us as coaches pin point the areas for our training moving forward. Â The attitude, effort, and fight we continue to bring will determine if we can increase some of our individual performances."

Additionally, Army's assistant coach Joe DeAngelo competed to a seventh-place finish at 55 kg to earn a berth to the Greco World Team Trials on May 17-18 in Raleigh.
