Three Black Knights Win Weekly League Awards

WEST POINT -Â The Patriot League announced Tuesday that three members of the Army West Point track and field team have received weekly awards after the team's performance at the Princeton Larry Ellis Invitational this weekend.Â
From the men's team, freshman Justin Young was named Patriot League Male Track Athlete of the Week. The Wylie, Texas, native set personal and league bests in his two individual races, posting a 14.04 in the 110 meter hurdles and a 51.71 in the 400 meter hurdles. Young has been no stranger to league weekly awards in his rookie campaign, as he has won four Patriot League Rookie of the Week awards in addition to his two Patriot League Male Track Athlete of the Week honors.Â
"Justin is positioning himself for a great championship season," head coach Mike Smith said. "He is putting together strong performances and has shown a level of consistency that will serve him well in the coming weeks. He hasn't mastered either the 110 HH or 400H races yet, so I expect that his times will continue to improve."
Freshman Jamir Gibson also received recognition from the league, winning Patriot League Male Rookie of the Week. The Zion, Ill., native broke the Army West Point discus record with his 58.64 meter throw on Saturday. The mark is the best in the Patriot League this season and ranks fifth in the East Region and 14th in all of the NCAA. Gibson joins teammates Michael Renard and Geoff Kirk in breaking Academy throwing records in 2019.Â
"The significance of Jamir's performance this weekend cannot be overstated," Smith said. "The Army school record is nice, but his rank among freshman performers (third) and his rank among U20 performers (first) tell the real story. What he is doing right now is incredible. Any conversation about the best discus throwers in the United States under the age of 20 has to include him. He is that good."Â
From the women's team, junior Calli McMullen continued her dominant third season with a Patriot League Female Track Athlete of the Week award. McMullen broke her own 200 meter mark with a 24.12 second time. McMullen also posted a strong 54.96 time in a third-place finish in the 400m dash, placing her second on the Army all time list.Â
"Calli is demonstrating the kind of versatility that will eventually take her to the highest levels of our sport," Smith said. "Her competitive instincts are very good and I think that there are more program records on the horizon for her."
