Black Knights Fall in Conference Tournament Final

WEST POINT, N.Y. - In a hard fought match that came down to the very end, the Army West Point men's tennis team came up just short versus Navy in the final of the Patriot League Conference Tournament.
The top seed Midshipmen (31-13) claimed their second-straight and 12th overall Patriot League Men's Tennis Championship title with a 4-3 victory over No. 2 Army West Point at the Malek Tennis Center.
Army (14-14) got off to a slow start in doubles play, as the Mids took No. 1 and No. 3 for the early 1-0 advantage.
The Black Knights would bounce back with some stellar singles action. Freshman David Gorshein tied it up after cruising in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5. Fellow plebe Nikita Larichev would make it 2-1 Army with a two-set victory of his own at No. 4.
Navy made it 2-2 at No. 2, with Tournament MVP Derrick Thompson winning in three sets.
The two teams would exchange the next two matches, with Navy winning at No. 3 and Army taking No. 6 to leave it all up to No. 1.
Court one was a thriller to the finish. After winning the first set, Myles Conlin battled in the final two sets. Down 5-2 in the second set, he broke Andrew Ton's serve twice to make it 5-5. Ton would pull ahead in the second set to win 7-5 and set up a all-or-nothing final frame for the title.
In fitting fashion, the third set would go to a tiebreak, with Ton able to put Navy over the top for the title.
