Two Black Knights Earn League Weekly Honors
April 16, 2019 | Men's Track and Field
WEST POINT - After posting league best scores in their respective events at the Bison Outdoor Classic, Army West Point track and field junior Michael Renard and freshman Marshall Beatty received weekly accolades from the Patriot League on Tuesday.Â
Renard was named Patriot League Male Field Athlete of the Week after recording a league leading score in the discus throw. His 56.71 meter throw was the best of his career at Army and ranks seventh in the NCAA East Region. This marks Renard's second league honor, after he earned the weekly award in March after setting the Army West Point program record in the shot put.Â
"Mike's success is not a surprise," head coach Mike Smith said. "He has committed himself to the process of getting better and the results are a reflection of a lot of hard work."
Freshman Marshall Beatty continued his impressive rookie campaign by recording a Patriot League-best time in the 5000 meter run on Sunday. Beatty's 14:11.41 mark stands ten seconds faster than the second leading time on the list. The performance earned the Missoula, Mont., native Patriot League Rookie of the Week.
"Marshall is a fearless competitor and does not shy away from the hard work necessary in the distance events," Smith said. "We have known that he could compete at a high level given his work ethic and talent level, but we didn't see this margin of improvement coming so quickly. He has certainly raised the bar for himself."Â
