Army Sits Fourth After Day One at 115th EIWAs

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The 23rd-ranked Army West Point wrestling team displayed a strong performance, sitting in fourth place after the first day of the 115th Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championships at Binghamton's Events Center on Friday.
The Black Knights' 78 points puts them behind only Lehigh (85 points), Cornell (82 points) and Princeton (82 points) after the first day of wresting. Army was the only team with 10 quarterfinalists and remains the only team with all 10 wrestlers remaining in the tournament.
Army is tied with Lehigh, Cornell and Princeton for the most semifinalists with six, led by junior Lucas Weiland at 157 pounds who qualified for the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive year. Joining Weiland in the semifinals are: junior Trey Chalifoux (125 lbs.), sophomore Lane Peters (133 lbs.), freshman Corey Shie (141 lbs.), junior Cael McCormick (165 lbs.) and freshman Ben Sullivan (285 lbs.).
The Cadets combined to go 20-4 on the day with eight bonus point wins on one fall, two technical falls and five major decisions. They added three wins over ranked opponents.

- Shie, Ogunsanya, McCormick and Sullivan all made their debut at the EIWA Championships.

We need to embrace the fact that tomorrow will be even tougher, and we need to be tougher. If we continue to fight hard we can push all 10 guys to the NCAA Championships."
