Rifle Completes Day One Of NCAA Championship

MORGANTOWN, W.V. - The Army West Point rifle team competed in the first of two days of the NCAA Championship at West Virginia University on Friday.
The Black Knights shot a combined score of 2295 in the smallbore relay portion of the event, which placed them seventh.
"Today was a little below what I expected," head coach Web Wright said. "Smallbore has troubled us all year. There were some good moments, but the overall score was a little low."
Senior co-captain Payne Nunn and sophomore co-captain Clayton Hanson posted even scores of 579 to lead the team. West Virginia and TCU tied for the lead with scores of 2331. TCU's Liz March posted the overall high score with a 588.
"I'm really looking forward to air rifle tomorrow because that really has been our strong suit all season," Wright said. "I think we have the potential to contend with the top couple of teams. We need to do what we know how to do and let the score take care of itself."
