Army Sweeps Stephen F. Austin In Midweek Series
March 14, 2019 | Baseball
NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Army West Point baseball team defeated Stephen F. Austin here Wednesday night, 8-5, to sweep the midweek series.
Army shifted to .500 (7-7) on the year after the win and have now registered at least seven runs in six of its seven victories this year.
The Black Knights jumped in front early 4-0 but saw their host rally back to knot the score in the sixth inning. Fortunately for the Cadets they used a big seventh inning to ultimately put the game away.
Anthony Giachin finished the night 3-for-5 with a run batted in and three runs scored. Andre Walden and Tim Simoes chipped in two hits each, while both also added multiple RBIs. Walden brought home three runs and Simoes reeled in two.
Army received solid pitching in the game, beginning with starter Logan Smith. The junior allowed just three hits and three runs (two earned) in 5.0 innings on the mound. Harry Flannery then came in for relief and closed out the final 4.0 innings. The Garrett Park, Md., native gave up four hits and two runs (one earned) in his first win of the year.
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Army's two-man pitching staff compiled six strikeouts.
- Giachin recorded the Black Knights' lone extra base hit in the game (a double) and it came during the third inning. He now sits with a team-best nine on the year.
- Jeremiah Adams and Josh White both converted on a sacrifice bunt.
- Walden (two) and Jacob Hurtubise were each credited with stolen bases.
- The 'Jacks failed to register an extra base hit in the game.
How It Happened
- The Cadets started the scoring early with three runs in the opening half inning. Drake Titus, Giachin and Walden posted back-to-back-to-back singles to spark a small rally. Walden's final single up the middle scored Army's first two runs. Adams then handed the Black Knights their second baserunner when he earned a walk. After the 'Jacks earned the second out of the frame, White singled up the middle to score Walden from second.
- Army tacked on another run in the top of the third when Giachin and Walden notched consecutive hits. Giachin led off the frame doubling to left center. Walden followed that up with a single up the middle to score the Cadets' fourth run of the game.
- The 'Jacks tallied one run back in the bottom of the third when Jake Georgiades singled to center field to score Kyle Cullen, who started the inning with a walk.
- SFA continued to chip away at the deficit and cut it in half at 4-2 in the fourth inning thanks to an unearned run.
- The home side cut the lead down to 4-3 during the next frame when Jared Martin registered a two-out single to the shortstop to score Josh Campbell.
- The 'Jacks finally completed the comeback in the sixth when they knotted things up at 4-4 following a bases loaded two-out passed ball.
- Army wasted little time being tied though as it broke through for four runs on three hits in the seventh to create an 8-4 gap between the teams.
- Hurtubise started the frame singling to center field. He advanced to third on back-to-back wild pitches, before Titus earned a walk to place runners on the corners with no outs. After a pitching change, Giachin singled to right field to score the Black Knights' opening run of the inning.
- The 'Jacks recorded the first out but Adams followed that up with a sacrifice bunt to score Titus from third. McKenna then kept the wheel moving when he earned a walk. He and Giachin shifted up a base during the next at bat following a wild pitch.
- White then loaded the bases with a walk before Simoes singled up the middle to score two more Army runs.
- SFA earned one run back in the bottom of the ninth but that would be all Army would allow as it held on for the three run victory.
