Nunn Receives Second Team All-American Honors
March 10, 2019 | Rifle
WEST POINT - Army West Point rifle senior co-captain Payne NunnĀ has been named to the Second Team All American team in Air Rifle by the NRA and received honorable mention All-American honors from the CRCA.Ā
"I am incredibly proud of Payne," head coach Web Wright said. "This is a great honor."Ā
The Virginilina, Va., native had a strong final campaign for the Black Knights, helping guide a young group to its first NCAA Championship appearance since the 2013-14 season.
"He arrived at West Point with little experience, but he had a lot of drive and work ethic." Wright said. "He was a walk-on who listened and took to heart what I told him and within a season, he was traveling with the team. By his sophomore year, he made the conference finals. By his junior year, he qualified for NCAAs as an individual competitor. In his senior year, he motivated the team to set multiple program records and a berth into the program's first NCAA Championship since 2014."Ā
NunnĀ set the Army program record in air rifle with a 597 score against North Carolina State earlier this season.Ā
"His leadership and vision as team captain has been pivotal to our success this year," Wright said. "He has mentored and shepherded all of these cadet-athletes with his unique sense of commitment and character. This team is undoubtedly better for his leadership presence."Ā
