Cadets Drops Weekend Finale to Louisiana-Monroe
February 17, 2019 | Baseball
BATON ROUGE, La. - The Army West Point baseball team saw Louisiana-Monroe score 10 unanswered runs here Sunday afternoon to take the 10-3 eight-inning victory in the teams' weekend finale.
Sunday's contest was on a time limit and no inning could start after 2 p.m CT due to the LSU-Air Force game, which was scheduled to kickoff at 3 p.m.
The Black Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the second inning but five runs in the fourth and two runs in the sixth by the Warhawks ultimately put the game out of reach.
Andre Walden and Trey Martin both tallied their first home runs of the year in the second frame. That was the first time two cadet-athletes hit long balls in the same inning since Alex Dickerson '17 and Jon Rosoff '18 did so against Albany on April 18, 2017.
Walden, Jacob Hurtubise and John McKenna all finished with two hits in the game to lead the Black Knight offense.
Logan Smith earned his first career starting nod, going 3.1 innings. The junior allowed four runs, two earned, on five hits. He also struck out two batters during his time on the hill. Smith retired nine of his first 12 batters until he ran into a little trouble in the fourth.
