Army Cracks Top-25 in NWCA Coaches Poll
February 13, 2019 | Wrestling
MANHEIM, Pa. – The Army West Point wrestling team entered the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division I Coaches Poll at 25th on Tuesday.
The Black Knights received 15 points in the poll and are ranked in the Coaches' Poll for the first time since Dec. 6, 2005.
"I'm proud of the recognition our wrestlers are getting at the national level," head coach Kevin Ward said. "It says a lot about the work they have put in and the belief they have in themselves and in their teammates. Being ranked in the top-25 is validation that we are on the right track, but that's not our end goal. Our goal is to continue to climb, continue to do what we have done and continue to do it better every day."
Â
Army improved to 7-2 on the season and 6-0 in EIWA duals following its thrilling 22-19 victory over Bucknell on Sunday. The win was the fifth straight for the Cadets, their longest streak since the 2016-17 campaign. Additionally, Army's 6-0 start in conference is its best since the 2005-06 campaign.
Â
Junior 174-pounder Ben Harvey and rookie 141-pounder Corey Shie have led the way for the Black Knights with 23 wins on the season, while Harvey boasts a team-best 8-1 record in duals. Shie owns 15 bonus point wins in his first collegiate campaign to lead the team, including a tie for the team lead in falls (7) and major decisions (6).
Senior 197-pounder and team captain Rocco Caywood paces a group of seven Cadets who are ranked in the Coaches' Panel at fourth. Joining him in the panel are: 19th-ranked Harvey (174 lbs.), 22nd-ranked Lucas Weiland (157 lbs.), 22nd-ranked Noah Stewart (184 lbs.), 26th-ranked Trey Chalifoux (125 lbs.), 27th-ranked Ben Sullivan (285 lbs.) and 28th-ranked Shie (141 lbs.).
The Black Knights return to the mat on Saturday when they travel to No. 21 Lehigh at 1 p.m.
