Murray Helps Army Halt Skid at Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. – The Army West Point women's basketball got a much-needed 64-40 road victory at Lafayette to snap a five-game losing skid on Wednesday night.
Kate Murray led the way for the Black Knights with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting. She also added five rebounds, two assists and two blocks in the victory. Madison Hovren recorded a double-double with 13 points and 18 boards, while Morgann Yancey had 12 points and was 3-of-5 from distance in the win.
Hovren tied Army's all-time record for career double-doubles with her 49th and she is even with Katie Macfarlane '04 for the most in Black Knights history.
Army held Lafayette to 40 points and the Leopards didn't have a player reach double digits as Drew Freeland had a team-high nine points. Natalie Kucowski, Lafayette's main threat, was 3-of-24 from the field. She did have 19 rebounds and four blocks in the losing effort.

- Army sweeps the season series against Lafayette and has now won nine games in a row in the series.
- This was 66th meeting between the two schools and Army leads 42-24.
- Tonight was Army's 16th win in Easton and leads in the series in Pennsylvania at 16-15.
- This was Army's first Patriot League road victory of the season and first away from Christl Arena since the game at Wagner on Dec. 8.
- The 40 points allowed by Army was tied for the fewest points this season by an opponent.
- Army is now 7-1 when scoring 60 or more points in a game.
- Lafayette was the 10th opponent Army has held under 60 points and is 9-1 in those games.
- The Leopards made only 16 shots, which was tied for the fewest by an Army opponent this season as Wagner made 16 on Dec. 8.
- Jess Lewis has now started in 25 straight games dating back to last season, which is a career high.
- Lewis had at least five assists for the 14th time this year and cracked the Army top 10 for single-season assists with 114 so far this year.
- Hovren reached double-digit scoring for the 22nd time this season and 77th time in her career.
- She added her 16th double-double of the year and 49th of her career and she is tied with Katie Macfarlane for the all-time Army record for double-doubles.
- Murray scored a career high 19 points, which is the most by a freshmen this year.
- Murray has now hit seven 3-pointers in her last five games and has scored in double figures in three-straight and four of the last five games.
- Yancey finished with her third double-digit scoring game of the season and has hit at least three shots from distance in five games this year.
- Sarah Bohn returned to the lineup and sunk a trio of treys for nine points. She has now hit 18 3-pointers this year.
- Army was outrebounded for only the fifth time this year and it was the first time the Black Knights come out on top on those games.
- The 24-point win was the second-largest margin of victory of the season.
- The Black Knights had single-digit turnovers for only the third time this year and they are 2-1 in those games and both victories have come against Lafayette.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
- Army started out shooting the ball really well through the first quarter at 53 percent and Yancey led all scorers with eight points on 3-of-3 shooting, including a pair of 3-pointers.
- The Black Knights opened the game on a 15-5 scoring run and ended up with a 20-10 lead after one. Hovren had five points and five rebounds in the first 10 minutes and Army had four players on the scoresheet in the opening frame.
- Army was outscored in the second quarter by an 11-9 margin, but went into the break with a 29-21 lead.
- Kate Murray, Jess Lewis and Gabby White got on the scoreboard for the Black Knights in the frame, but Army went over four minutes without a bucket. Army made up for it on the defensive end and took care of the ball with only three turnovers.
- Yancey had nine points at the half and Hovren chipped with with seven points and 10 rebounds.
- Lafayette come out of the locker room and got four points in the first two minutes to cut the Army lead to four at 29-25.
- The Black Knights responded with a 7-0 run with Murray and Hovren contributing all seven points to push Army's lead back to double digits at 36-25 with 5:51 remaining in the quarter.
- Lafayette's Alex Cantwell hit a 3-pointer to get the Leopards to within eight at the 4:46 mark, but Army closed out the third on an 8-0 run to make it 46-30 heading into the final quarter.
- Bohn kept the pressure on in the first half of the final frame with nine points in the first 4:38 of the quarter and gave Army a 55-34 lead. All nine of her points came from beyond-the-arc.
- Freeland sunk a layup and jumper to cut the lead to 55-38 with 4:17 remaining, but Army closed out the game with a 9-2 to earn its ninth victory of the season.

- Next up for the Black Knights is the Star Game in Annapolis on Saturday with the tipoff coming at 12 p.m. on CBS Sports Network. Army is looking for its first season sweep of the Mids since 2016 and its first star since that season as well.
