Day One Complete at the Midlands Championships

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. — Markus Hartman and Ben Harvey led the charge for the Army West Point wrestling team Sunday at the Sears Centre Arena.
Hartman and Harvey were both perfect during day one of competition at the 57th annual Midlands Championships, with both advancing to their respective semifinals.
Hartman earned four wins on the day competing at 157 pounds — three decisions and a fall. The sophomore scored upset wins over the No.1 and No. 6 seeds. His win over No. 1 seeded Quincy Monday in the round of 16 was the first victory over a top seed at this years tournament. Hartman's quarterfinal win over Logan Parks of Central Michigan, a second round pin, cemented a stellar day on the mat.
After finishing eighth at last years competition, Harvey scored three decision wins at 174 pounds on the way to a spot in the semifinals. The senior two-time NCAA qualifier outscored his three opponents 15-2 overall.
In addition to Hartman and Harvey, the Black Knights saw three other quarterfinalists Sunday. Competing at 197 pounds, Alex Hopkins went 3-1 on the day, including a 6-5 decision win over the No. 4 seeded Thomas Lane of Cal Poly.
Noah Stewart and Bobby Heald both went 2-1 competing at 184 pounds and 285 pounds respectively. Heald had an impressive 11-4 decision win over the No. 7 seeded Colton McKiernan of SIUE.
Monday's wrestling begins at 12:00 p.m. CT. That round will consist of the semifinals, a round of consolations and seventh-place matches. Monday night's final session at 7:05 p.m. CT will host the finals and third and fifth-place matches.
