Explosive First Half Lifts #3 Army Past #6 Colgate

WEST POINT, N.Y. — Fueled by a three-goal first half, the third-ranked Army West Point women's soccer team topped six-seeded Colgate Tuesday night in the Patriot League Quarterfinal by a final score of 4-0.
The Black Knights were explosive off the bat with two goals in the first 16 minutes of the game. Lauren Drysdale kicked things off for the Cadets in the fifth minute, while Erynn Johns tallied another 11 minutes later.
Johns had a hand in every goal tonight, posting a career-high six points in the postseason contest on two goals and added two assists.
Also in the double-digit points category tonight were Drysdale with three points and Simone Gardner with her first multi-assist effort.
The Black Knights snapped Colgate's five-game shutout streak with their four goals tonight. It was the most goals scored on the Raiders since they fell to Mississippi State in September of 2017.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Black Knights took advantage of a free kick just outside the box in the fifth minute. Gardner set up the play with a cross as Johns tipped the ball to Drysdale who went high for the score.
- In the 16th minute, Johns headed a ball in inside the box after a throw-in by Morgan Walsh and another cross by Gardner.
- Alyssa Carfagno was responsible for Army's third goal in the game notched in the 31st minute. Drysdale won a header battle and got the ball to Johns. She pitched it to the outside where Carfagno booted a long ball over the Colgate goalkeeper's head.
- To wrap up the Black Knights' scoring, Dara Murray carried the ball up the left side of the field and connected with Johns who was ready for the goal.
HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- The Black Knights improve to 8-6-4 overall and advance to the Patriot League Semifinals for the second-straight season.
- Army scored four goals in a postseason game for the first time since 1996 when it defeated Bucknell 5-1 in the Patriot League Semifinal (Nov. 9).
- In postseason action, the Cadets have posted 15 shutouts all-time.
- Overall, it was the first time the Black Knights' posted four goals in a game since 2016 when Army topped Fairleigh Dickinson 4-1.
- Johns posted a career-high six points on two goals and two assists.
- Her six points tied a Patriot League postseason record for tallies in a single game.
- It marked the junior's first multi-goal game, second multi-assist game and seventh multi-goal game in her career.
- She is the second Army player to post six points in a postseason game since Alexis Albano, an Army Sports Hall of Famer, did in 1993, also opposite the Raiders.
- Her and Gardner's two assists in the quarterfinal also tie a Patriot League record for helpers in a postseason contest.
- Johns is now third in scoring for Army with nine points. She is tied for second on the squad in goals with three.
- Drysdale notched her second multi-point game tonight, while Gardner tallied her first.
- Drysdale ranks second among Cadets for points (11), but is first in assists (5).
- Carfagno increases her goal total to six this season and now boasts a team-leading 15 points.
- Gardner tallied her first points of the season in tonight's game.
- Walsh now owns four assists this season to rank second on the team, while Murray has two in 2019.
- Sydney Cassalia backed the team in net with three saves.
- It was the junior's sixth shutout of the season and 22nd in her career.
- The Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year is now tied for second all-time at Army.
- Cassalia ranks tied for eighth in the Patriot League with her 22-career shutouts.
- The Black Knights outshot Colgate 22-10.
