Strong Second Half Secures Army Win

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Behind a physical second half performance, the Army West Point men's rugby team took down Rugby East opponent Mary Washington, 31-15 Saturday night at the Anderson Rugby Complex.
"The most pleasing part was our ability to not panic and just stay the course," said head coach Matt Sherman. "It was awesome having parents weekend [tonight] and there was just a lot of energy that the boys fed off of and I think they were proud of the effort and the resiliency the team showed."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Army put the pressure on right from the start. Larry Williams Jr. mauls his way in for an early try to make it 7-0 after Jack Royston's conversion.
- Mary Washington was stopped in the 12th minute after a long run, with Army able to hold them up from scoring a try.
- The Eagles were able to stay on their offensive end though, forcing a penalty kick. Adam Thomson made it 7-3 Army in the 15th minute.
- MW stayed on the offensive -- punches in a try to take an 8-7 lead in the 25th minute.
- After a long run, and a couple nice passes, the Eagles scored a try right before halftime. After Thomson's conversion, MW led 15-7 at the half.
- Physical start to the second half. After a successful scrum, Larry Williams Jr. pushed across the try line for his second score of the night. Royston added his second conversion to make it 15-14 Eagles in the 49th minute.
- The Black Knights continued to wear down the Eagles. Marco Carrabotta muscled his way in to put Army back ahead 19-15 in the 70th minute.
- Carrobotta dotted his second try to give Army the cushion they needed to seal the win the 76th minute.
- Maxwell Brown put the icing on the cake in the 80th minute to make it a 31-15 final.
