Second Half Surge Falls Short

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point women's rugby team battled for 80 minutes on a rain-soaked pitch at the Anderson Rugby Complex Wednesday night, but came up just short, falling to St. Francis Xavier, 20-19.
Damaria Morton, Charisma Henry, and Kailen Young all scored tries for Army (4-0, 3-0 NIRA), who welcomed the visitors from Nova Scotia for a non-league game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Saint Francis Xavier (SFX) went on the attack early, taking advantage of strong scum play.
- SFX was able to score three tries in the first 16 minutes to take an early 15-0 lead.
- Army was able to settle in, and eventually capitalized on an SFX turnover. Morton raced down the field to put the Black Knights on the board. After Gable added the conversion, SFX's lead was only 15-7.
- The Black Knights continued the momentum into the second half. The Cadets showed showed great passing, ending with Henry taking the ball at midfield and racing down the pitch for a lengthy try to make it 15-12.
- SFX was able to respond with a stellar kick, and eventual race down to dot the try. 20-12 in the 50th minute.
- Kailen Young put the Black Knights right back on the cusp, muscling in a try in the 63rd minute. After a McKenzie Borchers conversion, SFX led 20-19, which would stand till the end.
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Morton and Henry both scored their fifth tries of the fall, tying them with Sam Sullivan for the team lead.
- Young now has three tries during the 15s season.
- Gable's conversion now gives her 45 points on the season, tops on the team.
- Borcher's kicked her team leading eighth conversion.
