Strong First Quarter Secures Win for Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Thanks to an impressive first quarter, the Army West Point women's basketball team earned a 65-50 victory over Lafayette in Patriot League action on Wednesday.
Army hosted around 1,500 local young students as part of Education Day at West Point and didn't disappoint with its second league win of the year.
Madison Hovren finished with another double-double with a game high 23 points and 16 rebounds, while classmate Jess Lewis tied a career best with 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor. Lewis also dished out seven assists in the win, which was one off her career high. As a team, the Black Knight shot 41 percent from the field and had an advantage of 12-3 in points off of turnovers.
The Leopards had three players in double figures, led by Drew Freeland with 13, while Natalie Kucowski added 13 and Olivia Martino had 12.

- Lewis recorded five or more assists in a game for the 12th time in her career and seventh this year.

First Quarter
- Army played a great defensive first quarter allowing only two points, while Hovren, Lewis and Murray chipped in with four points each as the Black Knights had a 15-2 lead at the end of one period.
- The Leopards were able to cut the Army lead to six points with 2:13 left in the quarter. Kucowski had six points in the quarter for Lafayette and Martino had five.
- Army answered in the final two minutes with Murray, Hovren and Lewis all hitting shots in a short 6-0 run to take the 27-15 lead at halftime.
- Led by Hovren and Lewis, Army had a 39-23 lead at the 4:41 mark of the third quarter. Lewis hit a pair of 3-pointers and Hovren had six points on a couple of layups, while hitting two free throws as well.
- Lafayette scored a quick five points and cut the Army leads to 42-28, but Army answered with 3-pointers from Lewis and Yancey and took a 48-23 lead into the final quarter.
- Army trading buckets for most of fourth quarter with the Leopards, but never let them get closer than 14 points as the Black Knights closed out the game for a 65-50 victory to improve in the league standings.

- The Black Knights are back at Christl Arena on Saturday for a 12 p.m. tipoff against Navy on CBS Sports Network. Tickets are still available for the game and this Saturday's contest will not decide the Star for the Army-Navy Star Series, presented by USAA.
