MacAfee Nominated for Hobey Baker Award

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Dalton MacAfee of the Army West Point hockey team has been nominated for the Hobey Baker Award, announced by the association on Wednesday.

Awarded annually to college hockey's top player, the Hobey Baker fan-voting will run from now until Sunday, March 10 at midnight. College hockey fans can cast their vote by going to the voting website http://www.hobeybaker.com/vote. Follow the prompts to make your selection from this year's outstanding crop of 81 college hockey players representing 46 NCAA Division I schools.

Phase two of fan balloting will come from the list of Top Ten Hobey Baker finalists beginning March 20 and closing March 31. The fans' vote accounts for a full one percent of the total ballot in each phase in selecting this year's award recipient.

Award criteria include candidates exhibiting the exceptional character traits of the award's namesake, Hobey Baker. A legendary American hero, Baker was a World War I fighter pilot and was known as America's greatest amateur athlete in his day, excelling at hockey and football at Princeton University. Award candidates must demonstrate strength of character both on and off the ice, contribute to the integrity of his team and display outstanding skills in all phases of the game. Consideration should be given to scholastic achievement and sportsmanship.Â

MacAfee, a senior captain for the Black Knights, leads the team with 20 points to rank eighth among defensemen in college hockey. He is tied for 16th in the nation with 16 assists, which is good for fifth among defensemen.

The Needham, Mass., native ranks second in the country in power play points with 15 and averages 0.68 per game. He leads Army with 65 shots and 33 blocked shots.

The Black Knights are back in action this Saturday when they play host to the Royal Military College of Canada. It is the longest continuous internationally rivalry in sports and returns to the banks of the Hudson at 7:05 p.m.
