September 11, 2018 | Wrestling
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point wrestling team captured four rankings in WIN Magazine's preseason rankings.
The team tied for 33rd with Stanford, each earning 5.5 points in the tournament power index. Juniors Ben Harvey (10th at 174 lbs.) and Lucas Weiland (12th at 157 lbs.) were joined by senior captain Rocco Caywood (13th at 197 lbs.) in the individual rankings. All three wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Championships for the first time in their careers last season while setting personal bests in wins.
Harvey advanced to the blood round of the NCAA Championships a season ago (one win shy of being an All-American), becoming the first Army wrestler to do so after dropping his first match since Patrick Simpson in 2006. His 4-2 record marked just the 15th time an Army wrestler won at least four matches at nationals. The New Palestine, Ind., native ranked second on the team with a 22-11 record. Harvey added a team-best 9-8 record against ranked opponents, including victories over No. 7 Ethan Ramos (North Carolina), No. 8 Jadaen Bernstein (Navy) and No. 9 Keaton Subjeck (Stanford).
Weiland posted a team-best 24-17 record and tied for the second-most bonus point wins on the squad with 11. His 2-2 showing at NCAAs included a 9-1 major decision over 26th-ranked Andrew Shomers (Edinboro) for the program's first bonus point win at the national tournament since Brian Harvey in 2015. The Barnhart, Mo., native added a 4-2 decision over No. 8 Archie Colgan (Wyoming) to join Harvey as the first pair of Cadets to each win multiple matches at NCAAs since 2008.
Caywood documented a 20-14 record as one of five Army wrestlers with at least 20 wins. After a seventh-place showing at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championships, the Toledo, Ohio, native earned his first at-large bid to the NCAA tournament in his home state. He went 1-2 at the event, including a 4-1 victory over 10th-ranked Scottie Boykin (UT-Chattanooga) to mark the first time since 2012 that three Cadets won a match at the national tournament.
