Army Wraps Up Regular Season With 11-4 Win
May 08, 2018 | Baseball
ALBANY, N.Y. - The Army West Point baseball team ended its 2018 regular season on a high note with an 11-4 victory over Albany here Tuesday afternoon.
The Black Knights will now shift their attention to the postseason, which is set to kick off Saturday. Army will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Patriot League tournament and will host No. 3 Bucknell in a best-of-three series. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday followed by a single game on Sunday, if necessary. First pitch for both days is slated for noon at Doubleday Field.
In Tuesday's regular season finale, the Black Knights saw four cadet-athletes register multiple hits, including Jacob Hurtubise's 3-for-4 performance. The sophomore finished with one run batted in, two runs scored, one walk and two stolen bases.
Josh White, Drake Titus, and John McKenna each chipped in two hits as well to help the Army offense. McKenna brought home three runs, which marked the sixth time this season the sophomore reeled in multiple RBI.
On the hill, seven Black Knights' saw action with starting pitcher Mike Gagliardi earning his fourth win of the season. The junior pitched the opening two innings (pre-determined), allowing just one hit and three walks.
Army broke the deadlock in the second inning with two runs on two hits. Anfernee Crompton converted on a sacrifice fly ball during the frame to score McKenna, before Hurtubise doubled to right center to bring home Trey Martin.
The Great Danes cut into the advantage in the bottom of the third following a double and a single to pull within 2-1.
But the Cadets quickly answered with an impressive individual two-out rally by Hurtubise. The sophomore singled through the right side to get himself on base. He then stole second and third, before scoring on a throwing error by the catcher.
Army increased its edge to 5-1 with two more runs in the top half of the fifth following a two-out, two-RBI single from McKenna. Unfortunately, the Great Danes recorded three big runs on two long balls in the bottom half to make it a one-run ballgame heading into the sixth.
But that's when the Cadets' offense took over. Army proceeded to score four runs on five hits in the sixth, including reaching base on four-straight at bats. Hurtubise, White, Titus, McKenna and pinch hitter Rob Regine all posted hits during the frame. Rosoff, Titus, Regine and McKenna were all credited with an RBI.
Two final runs by the visitors in the ninth ultimately put the game out of reach.
