March 28, 2018 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point baseball team defeated Siena, 9-6, here Wednesday afternoon in its home opener.
The victory marked Army's fifth-straight win and gives the Cadets momentum heading into their home-opening weekend, which begins with a doubleheader against Bucknell on Saturday.
The Black Knights broke the scoreless deadlock with three runs in the bottom of the third. Anfernee Crompton led-off the inning with a single to right field. Brendan Siriani shifted him to second following a sacrifice bunt before Jacob Hurtubise placed runners on the corners after his bunt single. Drake Titus then singled through the right side to score Army's first run of the game. During the ensuing at bat, Hurtubise touched home plate after the Saints failed to pick off Titus at first. On the play Titus advanced to third. Siena answered notching the second out of the inning via a strikeout but John McKenna followed that up singling up the middle to score Titus.
During the next inning, Army combined for four runs on five hits to break the game open at 7-0. Trey Martin, Josh White and Crompton recorded back-to-back-to-back hits to lead off the frame, highlighted by a double from White. Hurtubise and Titus both registered hits later on in the inning.
The Saints responded with two runs in the top of the fifth thanks to two hits but the Black Knights answered with a run in the bottom half to keep their opponent at bay.
Army added one final run in the sixth to create a 9-2 gap between the teams.
Siena tried to rally in the eighth when it scored four runs on one hit and one error but the Cadets registered the final out of the frame following a groundout to end the Saints hopes of pulling even.
Matt Gray then came into the game in the ninth and nearly sat Siena down in order to secure the win. The rookie allowed just one, two-out walk during his one inning on the mound.
Starting pitcher Mike Gagliardi was credited with the victory after going a predetermined 4.0 innings allowing just one hit and five walks.
Army was led on offense by Titus, who finished 4-for-5. White, Hurtubise, McKenna, and Crompton also tallied multiple hits in the game, going 3-for-4, 2-for-4, 2-for-3, and 2-for-3, respectively.
