March 17, 2018 | Baseball
TAMPA, Fla. – The Army West Point baseball team saw South Florida register a 5-2 victory here Saturday night.
The Bulls improve to 14-6 on the season, while Army dips to 7-11.
USF recorded three runs in the opening frame to put the Black Knights in an early hole. They then tacked on two more runs following a two-out line drive home run to left field in the bottom of the fifth.
Army responded though with two runs of its own in the following inning. Jacob Hurtubise jumped started a two-out rally when he drilled a single to center field. Josh White then notched his second double of the year during the ensuing at bat to bring home the Cadets' first run of the frame. Jon Rosoff kept the wheel moving by singling to center field to score White from second. Unfortunately, the Bulls tallied a strikeout to halt the Black Knights rally and end the inning.
Starting pitcher Tyler Giovinco went 6.1 innings, allowing 10 hits, five runs and two walks. The junior fanned a team-best four batters during his time on the hill.
Jacob Carte came in for relief, closing out the final 1.2 innings. The Charlotte, N.C., native allowed a hit to the first batter he faced but then forced USF to hit into a 5-4-3 double play to end the frame. Carte continued his strong outing in the eighth, retiring the side down in order to keep the Black Knights within striking distance.
Hurtubise led Army offensively, finishing 2-for-4 with a run scored. White, Rosoff and Trey Martin also recorded a hit in the game.
