March 14, 2018 | Baseball
DELAND, Fla. – The Army West Point baseball team earned an 8-4 victory over No. 28 Stetson here Wednesday night.
The Hatters, who were voted 12th in the Collegiate Baseball poll and 28th in the NCBWA poll, saw their nine-game winning streak halted in the contest.
The Cadets jumped on things early, notching five big runs in the second inning to break to game open. Anthony Giachin and Anfernee Crompton started the frame by notching back-to-back singles. Rob Regine then reached on an error following a sacrifice bunt to load the bases. Josh White was hit by a pitch during the next at bat, which brought home Army's first run of the inning. The Hatters tallied the first out on a fielder's choice but still had to deal with the bases being loaded when Jacob Hurtubise stepped up to the plate. The sophomore kept the wheels moving by drilling a long fly ball out to center field to bring home another Black Knights' run.
On the ensuing at bat, Garrett Houston walked to again load the bases before Stetson made a pitching change. Jon Rosoff was hit by a pitch during the next play which allowed for Army's third run to touch home plate. Two more bases loaded walks drawn by Matt Hudgins and Giachin closed out the Cadets scoring.
Stetson tallied one run back in the third and two more in the fourth but three additional runs by the visitors ultimately put the game out of reach. Crompton led off the fifth frame earning a walk. Regine followed that up getting hit by a pitch. The two shifted up a base after a wild pitch, placing runners in scoring position. During the next at bat, White tripled to bring home both runs. Tim Simoes then singled up the middle to score White.
The Hatters did manage one final run in the sixth but the deficit ultimately proved to be too much.
White led Army's charge, finishing 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs and two walks. He was one home run shy of hitting for the cycle as well, posting a single, double and triple in the game.
Simoes compiled multiple hits in the game as well, while also bringing in one run and accounting for one run.
Daniel Burggraaf earned the win on the mound after allowing just four hits and three runs, two of which were earned, in 5.0 innings of work. The junior notched a game-high five strikeouts as well.
Carter Van Gytenbeek came in for extended relief pitching the next three innings. The sophomore gave up three hits and one run during his time on the hill.
Senior Matt Ball then closed out the final frame, nearing striking out the side to secure the victory.
