Maryland Earns Comeback Win in Series Finale
February 25, 2018 | Baseball
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Army West Point baseball team could not sweep the weekend series at Maryland here Sunday afternoon as the Terps recorded a 6-3 comeback win.
Army held a 3-0 advantage after Tim Simoes and Jacob Hurtubise reeled in three big runs in the second. John McKenna was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Maryland then registered a fly out before Anfernee Crompton reached base on a fielder's choice, erasing McKenna from the base path. Anthony Giachin followed things up singling to left field to place runners on first and second. On the ensuing at bat, Josh White earned a walk to load the bases. Simoes kept the wheel moving with another walk to bring home the Cadets' first run of the game. Hurtubise added two more runs for the visitors after his single to left field brought home Giachin and White.
Maryland would answer in the third and fourth with four runs to pull in front 4-3. The Terps touched home plate thanks to the help of a double, wild pitch, ground out and walk.
The Black Knights tried to rally in the fifth with runners on the corners but their two-out bunt attempt for a single was just beaten out by a great throw from third baseman Taylor Wright.
After the Terps added a one-out home run to left field in the bottom of the seventh, the Cadets had a chance to tie things up with runners on first and second with two outs in the top of the eighth. Unfortunately, the home side recorded a big strikeout to end the inning.
One more additional run for Maryland on a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth ultimately put the Black Knights in a hole.
Army would manage to get two runners on in the final inning but the Terps tallied the last two outs to halt any hope of their opponent knotting the score.
Rosoff finished 2-for-3 on the day, making him the lone cadet-athlete with multiple hits in the game. Crompton, Giachin and White each posted a run, while Hurtubise (2) and Simoes accounted for Army's runs batted in.
Sam Messina dropped to 0-2 on the season after giving up three hits, four runs and three walks in his 4.2 innings of work. The junior did manage to register a team-best five strikeouts.
Matt Gray, Carter Van Gytenbeek, Daniel Burggraaf and Cam Opp all saw action on the hill as well. Gray allowed one run on three hits in 1.2 innings of work, while Van Gytenbeek was tabbed with one unearned run in his 1.1 innings.
