Black Knights Cruise to Win Over UMass

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The 16th-ranked Army West Point men's lacrosse started the season off on a great note, defeating UMass, 18-6, on Saturday afternoon at Michie Stadium.
Army (1-0) was lead by David Symmes, Conor Glancy, Ted Glesener and Nate Jones. All four of them recorded hat tricks, while Symmes was the game's highest scorer with four points.
Goalie AJ Barretto made nine saves in his 2018 debut.
Noak Rak was UMass' best player on the field with two goals and he won 12-of-19 faceoffs.

- The 18 goals were the most in the series for the Black Knights.
- The Black Knights have won four in a row versus UMass for the first time in the series.
- The 18 goals scored were the most in a season opener since 1993 when Army beat Cornell 18-5.
- Glesener scored his fourth career hat trick, while Glancy added his third.
- Symmes ended up one off of his career high which was against Notre Dame last season.
- Jones finished with his fourth career hat trick.
- Barretto remains undefeated against UMass and in three season openers in net.
- Joe Alberici earned his 104th win at Army and is now 4-4 against UMass. It was his 114th all-time victory as a head coach.
- The senior class has 33 wins in their careers and went undefeated in season openers.
- Army went 4-for-7 on man-up opportunities with goals from Nickolas Edinger, Glesener, Symmes and Jones.
- Edinger, Sean O'Brien, Nicholas Garofano and Alex Alacqua each scored their first collegiate goals in the win.
TURNING POINT
- The Black Knights went on a 10-1 run from the end of the first quarter until the beginning of the third to break the game open.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Army came out and scored four of the first five goals to build a 4-1 lead in the beginning stages of the opening quarter.
- Glesener scored his second of three on the day with a man-up tally to begin the second quarter and started a 7-0 run that went halfway into the second quarter. Army lead 11-2 before UMass got on the board with 6:38 left in the third frame.
- The Minuteman went without a goal for over 28 minutes.
- Army had three man-up goals, while Glesener and Glancy each had two goals during the run.
- UMass closed the gap with four of the next six goals, but Army closed the game out with the last five tallies.
- Glancy and Symmes finished their hat tricks, while Garofano, Alaqua and Angle got on the board for the Black Knights.

- The Black Knights are back in action on Tuesday against NJIT at 3 p.m. at Michie Stadium.
