Army Kicks Off Indoor Season With Strong Effort
December 01, 2018 | Men's Track and Field
WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point Track and Field team opened its indoor season by competing at Gillis Field House in the Crowell Open. Â
Coach's Corner:Â Head Coach Mike SmithÂ
"This was without question the best December meet we have had since I arrived here. Practice intensity and meet intensity are two very different things, and today we were able to evaluate our people in a competitive environment for the first time. All fall, I have felt like we were a pretty good team on both sides and today confirmed that. There was a lot of individual highlights.
On the men's side, some familiar names led us today. Mike Renard had a nice opener in shot put, Keagan Smith looked great in the 1000m, Tyrell Maddox was very good in the 500m and our 4x400m relay looked very strong in setting a new meet record. I was most impressed by what our plebes did today. Justin Young looked sharp in the hurdles. His time today was as good as any in the conference last year and it was his first race. He is still adjusting to the collegiate height, so what he did today is a really good indicator of what is possible in the future. Michael Mullally's hurdle races were also pretty good. A year ago, he was hurdling over 39" hurdles and running similar times to what he did today. I was really happy with all of our young guys out there.Â
Maybe the most telling statistic is that we set 12 meet records today between the men's and women's teams. Those records came from every event area. I told our team that the results today were an indication of a successful process. Our preseason training was solid. Now we have to replicate our process over the next month and we will have the same kind of success in the meets that matter. Today was just a starting point. If we take care of business in training over break, we will be very good this indoor season on both sides. Now we have to keep moving forward...and that starts Monday."Â
