October 17, 2018 | Wrestling
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Four Army West Point wrestlers were named in the InterMat, FloWrestling and The Open Mat preseason polls.
Senior Rocco Caywood, along with juniors Ben Harvey, Noah Stewart and Lucas Weiland found themselves in the respective polls. Harvey (13th IM, 12th Flo, 13th TOM) and Weiland (17th IM, 13th Flo, 13th TOM) were the only Cadets ranked in all three polls. Caywood saw his name in the InterMat and The Open Mat rankings at 18th in each, while Stewart was recognized as the 20th-best 184-pounder by FloWrestling.
Harvey advanced to the blood round of the NCAA Championships a season ago (one win shy of being an All-American), becoming the first Army wrestler to do so after dropping his first match since Patrick Simpson in 2006. His 4-2 record marked just the 15th time an Army wrestler won at least four matches at nationals. The New Palestine, Ind., native ranked second on the team with a 22-11 record. Harvey added a team-best 9-8 record against ranked opponents, including victories over No. 7 Ethan Ramos (North Carolina), No. 8 Jadaen Bernstein (Navy) and No. 9 Keaton Subjeck (Stanford).
Weiland posted a team-best 24-17 record and tied for the second-most bonus point wins on the squad with 11. His 2-2 showing at NCAAs included a 9-1 major decision over 26th-ranked Andrew Shomers (Edinboro) for the program's first bonus point win at the national tournament since Brian Harvey in 2015. The Barnhart, Mo., native added a 4-2 decision over No. 8 Archie Colgan (Wyoming) to join Harvey as the first pair of Cadets to each win multiple matches at NCAAs since 2008.
Stewart was a scoring machine for the Black Knights last season, ranking fourth on the squad with 10 bonus point wins, including a team-high seven technical falls. The Lewistown, Pa., native claimed first place at the Journeymen Classic and was one of five Army wrestlers to start all nine dual meets. He picked up his first-career win over a ranked opponent with an 8-6 decision over No. 16 Joe Heyob in the dual against Penn.
Caywood documented a 20-14 record as one of five Army wrestlers with at least 20 wins. After a seventh-place showing at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championships, the Toledo, Ohio, native earned his first at-large bid to the NCAA tournament in his home state. He went 1-2 at the event, including a 4-1 victory over 10th-ranked Scottie Boykin (UT-Chattanooga) to mark the first time since 2012 that three Cadets won a match at the national tournament.
The Black Knights open their season at the Princeton Open on Nov. 4.
