HOW IT HAPPENED
- Despite seven first-quarter turnovers by the Raiders, it was just a three-point game, 15-12, when the buzzer sounded to end the opening frame. Colgate outrebounded the Black Knights, 14-5, including 7-3 on the offensive glass. The Raiders capitalized on their extra opportunities and put in six second-chance points.
- It remained a close game throughout the second quarter. Army grabbed a six-point advantage after back-to-back baskets inside by Lena' Hicks and Hovren. The Raiders chipped into the deficit and with 5:47 left in the half, went on a 12-3 run and went into the break with a 30-26 lead. During that run, Colgate shot 50 percent from the field (4-for-8).
- At the break, Army was shooting 11-for-31 from the field as a team and 2-for-10 from long range. Hovren was the lone Cadet to get into a rhythm offensively, knocking down four of her six tries from the floor. Colgate faced similar offensive struggles from deep, but made up for it by posting 20 of its 30 points from inside the painted area.
- Colgate struggled to take care of the ball in the first 2:16 of the new half and turned it over three times. Army took advantage of the Raider miscues and used a 6-0 run to go ahead 32-30. Following a Colgate score, Hovren scored on put backs on two consecutive Army possessions.
- The Raiders pulled within one after a Tegan Graham 3-pointer sparked a 9-4 run. However, a Murray basket with seconds remaining put Army back on top, 42-41.
- Army turned it up offensively in the final quarter and went on a 9-2 run over the first 3:56 with Hubbell scoring four points to give the Black Knights a 51-43 lead. It was a seven-point game, 57-50, with 3:46 remaining, but Colgate got a pair of good looks from inside and scored to pull within three.
- That would be as close as the Raiders would get though as McNeal came up with a clutch steal with 29 seconds left, which led to a Hubbell layup. From that point on, Colgate did not make another shot and Army escaped with the league win.
UP NEXT
- The Black Knights will return to Christl Arena on Saturday afternoon to play host to Loyola in a Patriot League contest slated for 3 p.m.
