Army Caps Season with Team Banquet

WEST POINT, N.Y. – To cap off an impressive season by Army West Point gymnastics, the team gathered at head coach Dr. Doug Van Everen's house to celebrate the accomplishments of the year.

The Black Knights honored the gymnast of the year, the most improved gymnast of the year and the most valuable gymnast. In addition, captains were named for the 2018 season.

Freshman Grant Cullen was named the Most Improved Gymnast of 2017. After beginning the season with two parallel bar scores in the 11.400-11.800 range, Cullen kicked it into high gear and tacked an extra two-points to his score. The Easton Mass., native qualified for the NCAAs and posted a career-high 13.700 on PB against Navy.

The Most Valuable Gymnast was awarded to junior Nathan Goff who qualified as an all-arounder for the Winter Cup and for the NCAA National Championships. Goff, who hails from Tucson, Ariz., moved forward to the individual finals of the parallel bars at the NCAAs. He tied for first in all-around at the ECAC Championships with a score of 80.900.

Senior captain Leo Genders garnered Gymnast of the Year distinction as he qualified for the NCAA National Championships in three events. The Lancaster, Ohio, native championed the high bar in six of his nine showings during his senior campaign including a first-place finish at the ECAC Championships.

Van Everen also announced Goff and Nick McAfee as the 2018 Team Captains to close-out the festivities.
