Army Celebrates Season with Banquet
May 01, 2017 | Wrestling
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point wrestling team concluded the 2016-17 season with its annual year-end banquet.
On the season, the Black Knights posted a record of 7-5 in duals with a 5-3 mark in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association. It was the most dual wins in a season since 2013-14 and included a five-match winning streak from Jan. 6-22 that was the longest since 2013-14.
Army also earned a victory in the annual Star Match versus Navy, marking the first the Cadets captured the Star in two-of-three years since winning three straight from 1960-62. Head coach Kevin Ward became the second coach in Army history to defeat the Mids on multiple occasions and the first to win two of his first three Star Matches.
That success continued in tournaments as well, with an 18th place finish at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and Army's second All-Academy Championship title in as many years. This was the first time in program history that the Black Knights won back-to-back All-Academies championships.
In the postseason, the Cadets placed fourth at EIWAs, completing their first years having consecutive top-five finishes since 1991-92. A large part of that success can be attributed to podium finishes from Trey Chalifoux (5th at 125 pounds), Logan Everett (6th at 141 pounds), Russ Parsons (2nd at 157 pounds), Andrew Mendel (3rd at 165 pounds), Ben Harvey (7th at 174 pounds), Samson Imonode (3rd at 184 pounds) and Rocco Caywood (6th at 197 pounds). The seven podium finishes was the most for Army since 2006.
Four Black Knights traveled to St. Louis, Mo., to compete in the NCAA Championships as Parsons made his third appearance, Everett and Imonode were two-time participants and Mendel made his debut at the national tournament.
