Cadets Split Patriot League Opener with Lafayette
April 01, 2017 | Baseball
The Leopards earned a 10-6 victory in the Game 1 before the Cadets' rebounded for a 10-5 win in the nightcap.
Jon Rosoff, Kris Lindner and Josh White all hit over .600 in the twin bill. Rosoff finished 4-for-6 with a run batted in and two runs. Lindner and White went 5-for-8 and 3-for-5, respectively. Lindner accounted for one run, while White touched home plate four times. Both of those two also added two RBI each.
Rookie Jacob Hurtubise chipped in four hits, an RBI and two runs during his eight at bats as well to help the Black Knights' offense.
Jacob Carte earned the win on the hill in Game 2 after pitching an impressive 5.2 innings. The sophomore allowed five hits and just two runs, while striking out four during his time on the mound.
Drake Titus took the loss in Game 1 after giving up three hits and six runs, four of which were earned, in his 0.1 innings of work.
In Game 1, both teams posted a run in the opening inning. Army broke the deadlock in the top of the third when White scored on a one-out bases loaded balk. The Black Knights added three runs in the fourth and one more run in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 6-1. Unfortunately, the Leopards responded with a big bottom half of the fifth inning when they registered nine runs to take over the edge at 10-6. The Cadets were never able to recover.
In the nightcap, Lafayette notched the game's first run in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 advantage. Army responded over the course of the next two-and-a-half innings with four runs to take over the lead at 4-1. David Monge, Matt Hudgins, White and Hurtubise were all credited with an RBI during that stretch. Alex Woinski answered for the home team in the bottom half of the fourth following a home run to left field, pulling the Leopards within 4-2. Army tacked on three additional runs in the sixth and eighth, however, to ultimately put the game out of reach.
