WEST POINT, N.Y. - Gymnastics senior Leo Genders, men's track and field sophomore Kevin Dyer and women's track and field freshman Emily Malone were all recognized as tri-Army Athletic Association Athletes of the Week.
Genders, who hails from Lancaster, Ohio, helped lead the gymnastics team to a 405.850-402.800 Star Meet victory over Navy last week with season-high performances in each of his routines. The Black Knights trailed the Mids after three events, but, fueled by Genders, the Cadets turned out outstanding scores on the vault, parallel bars and high bar to overtake their rivals.
Genders boasted a 14.600 on a stunning high bar routine to mark the second straight week as the champion of that event. He also saw success on the vault with a 14.300 score and on the floor where he posted marks of 13.350.
The gymnastics team will again face Navy and the other service academies this weekend as Army travels to San Antonio, Texas, for the All-Academy Championships on Saturday.
Dyer lifted the men's track and field team to their first win over Navy in five years, by a score of 97-84. The Fort Knox, Ky., native won gold in not only the 200-meter dash, but also the 60-meter dash. The Black Knights starting racking up the points early in the meet and never looked back.
Dyer's time of 21.78 seconds in the 200-meter dash set a new season best for Army. Clocking a time of 6.80 seconds in the 60-meter was only .04 seconds behind the season best for the team.
Malone was a standout performer in the women's 100-81 win over Navy. The Hazelton, Pa., native started the day edging out her opponents in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.82 seconds, only .001 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.
In the 200-meter dash she topped the podium yet again clocking a time of 25.38 seconds. Malone finished the day with a second place finisher in the high jump. She reached a height of 1.52 meters, a new team season best.
The track and field teams are back in action this Friday at the Fastrack Invitational. This meet will be help on Staten Island at the Ocean Breeze facility with events starting at 10 a.m.
