Big Innings Hinder Baseball in Game Two
May 07, 2016 | Baseball
A four-run first inning for the Hawks (30-13) got the home side out to an early lead. Two one-out errors put runners on first and third for Hartford with a balk bringing in the game's first run. A double by Ben Bengtson scored Chris DelDebbio for the second run of the inning. T.J. Ward singled in Bengtson in the next at-bat, while Joe Roberti's RBI single capped the scoring in the opening frame.
That would be all the help Hartford starter Kyle Gauthier needed as the righty tossed five perfect innings.
Hartford would add an insurance run to the lead in the bottom of the second. David MacKinnon led off the inning with a base hit and advanced to third on a single two batters later. Bengtson hit a sacrifice fly to left field to extend the Hawks' lead to 5-0.
The Hawks broke out for seven runs in the fifth inning. Hartford totaled seven hits in the inning.
After removing Gauthier at the start of the sixth inning, Army (16-32) got its first baserunner of the game with Keegan Vega leading off with a walk. Hartford carried a team no-hitter into the eighth inning before the first Cadet of the inning once again spoiled the fun. Senior co-captain Brock Davidson singled to left field and would be driven in by Alex Dickerson three batters later. Greg Carter moved Davidson into scoring position by being hit by a pitch allowing Dickerson to drive in Army's first run of the game.
The Black Knights managed to push across three runs in the ninth inning. After loading the bases with no outs following singles by Trey Martin and Baggio Saldivar and a walk to Jon Rosoff, Davidson drove in the first run of the inning with his second hit of the game. An RBI single by John McCarthy plated Saldivar, followed by a sacrifice fly by Vega to score Rosoff.
The Black Knights will conclude their 2016 campaign with the series finale against Hartford tomorrow from Palisades Credit Union Park in Pomona, N.Y. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
